Fargo officials looking for feedback after bond issue fails

Woodward, Okla. — FARGO--Disappointment is what was felt by Fargo Superintendent Terry Stevens after a proposed $14 million bond to update the district's facilities failed on Tuesday night.

The bond money would have been used to add a new building on the Fargo school campus, featuring 10 new classrooms, a new gym, a cafetorium and band room that doubled as a safe room.  However, the bond would have also meant raising the district's taxes by 29.97 percent.

The measure was voted down by an almost 2-1 margin.  The unofficial results from Tuesday's election showed that  137 voters opposed the bond, while only 75 voted in favor of it. These results are unofficial until certified by the election board on the Friday following an election.

"I appreciate all the hard work of those that worked (to try) to pass this and the ones that voted for it," Stevens said.

As for those who voted against it, he said, "We want to know why people didn't want to pass it."

The school district wants feedback from the public about what they objected to in the proposed bond.

"Was it the gym, or the increase in the taxes? We just want to know what we need to do to change the bond to get it to pass next time," Stevens said.

The superintendent said he understands the economic impact this type of bond would have on families, but he just really wants to know what needs to change on the proposal for them to do the necessary changes to improve the school.

"Most of the bond cost was for the new classrooms and the cafetorium," Stevens said.

Anyone who has comments on the bond and what should be done in the future is asked to call the school at (580) 698-2298.  Or they may talk to any school board member.

"As teachers when a child fails a class we want to know why. So why did our bond fail?" Stevens said.
