EMS sponsoring 'Socks for Seniors'

Woodward, Okla. — The Socks for Seniors program is coming to Woodward this holiday season courtesy of Woodward County EMS.

This non-profit community service project is held with the intent of organizing, collecting, and distributing new socks to seniors throughout the community.

Jamie Coyne started the Socks for Seniors organization in Ohio 12 years ago and there are now groups helping in 300 cities nationwide.

Vanessa Brewington, administrator at Woodward County EMS, said, "Well we saw the Socks for Seniors article in the paper and we were looking for community service project to get involved with, so we thought we'd give it a try.

"We contacted them and they set us up. They sent us literature on how to do things and provided information about how other organizations around the nation participate in the Socks for Seniors program."

Brewington said EMS chose to do Socks for Seniors because,  "I think it's beneficial to seniors and makes them happy. A lot of times we see elderly in nursing homes who've outlived family or whose family live somewhere else, so to know somebody cared enough to make a donation makes a big difference in their day."

"It lets seniors know we're thinking about them, and in addition to that a lot of seniors are on limited incomes and use their money buying things for their healthcare needs, so this can really help them out," she added.

Woodward EMS encourages everyone to bring out as many socks as they can.

"We need new socks, any kind, plain white, colored socks, non slip ones really helps out keeping seniors from falling down, but anything that keeps their feet warm will do," she said.

Donations can be made from now through Dec 21 at decorated donations boxes located at Mooreland Elementary School, Hutch's C Store in the K101 Center, the Moose Lodge, Woodward Regional Hospital, First American Bank in Woodward, or the Woodward County EMS entryway.

"This is our first year, but I look forward to it becoming an annual event," Brewington said.

Questions concerning local efforts including collection, distribution, or to arrange a pickup contact Brewington at the Woodward County EMS at 254-3341.
