State Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, is coming to Mooreland.
As part of fundraising efforts for her own campaign and to help celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the U. S. Constitution in 1787, Kern will speak at a Constitution Day dinner hosted by the Woodward County Republican Women’s Club on Sept. 17.
The event, which will begin at 6 p.m., will be held in the Mooreland Community Building.
Carolyn McLarty, president of the Woodward County Republican Women’s Club, said the club invited Kern to speak at the event because “we like to have Republican women come speak with us when we can.”
“Right now there are only 9 state representatives who are Republican women, and we want to encourage them however we can,” McLarty said.
That is why the event will also serve as a club fundraiser that will go to help support Kern and other Republican candidates on the campaign trail this election year, she said. Money will be raised through ticket sales and a dessert auction held that evening.
“This is a very important election year and we need to support the candidates we want at all levels of government,” McLarty said, noting she feels that this year Oklahoma has “a great slate of Republican candidates from the top down.”
As to why Woodward County Republicans should help fund a campaign for the Oklahoma County state representative, she said “because it’s one state and we’re a part of that state.”
“It makes a difference,” she said, noting “there’s only 101 votes, so if we can, we need to help good conservatives all along the way.”
In addition, McLarty said she believes Kern to be “an outstanding state representative.”
“She’s a good solid Republican conservative Christian woman who has the right values,” she said of Kern.
Furthermore, as “a more well-known state representative,” McLarty said by having Kern as the speaker for this event, more people might be inclined to attend.
She said she expects Kern to “probably speak about government.”
“She’s a former high school government teacher and education is one of her main issues,” McLarty said, adding, “I also expect she’ll talk about the Constitution.”
Beyond Kern’s speech though, she said the club is planning a few other activities to help celebrate Constitution Day.
“We have little pocket-sized Constitutions and everyone who buys a ticket will get one of those,” McLarty said.
“I also found some Constitutional trivia and some quizzes; so we’ll have some fun with that,” she said.
In addition, she said the event will also include live musical performances by Jill Justice and Joel McClung, both of Oklahoma City, who will play the Celtic harp and fiddle respectively. McLarty said local trumpeter Debbie Brawley will also perform.
Since the event also includes a barbecue beef dinner, those wishing to attend are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance so there is an accurate dinner count.

“Everyone’s welcome, you don’t have to be a member of the club to attend,” McLarty said. “Anyone can come who wants to support our Republican candidates.”
