Woodward, Okla. — In a short, special meeting Wednesday evening, the Woodward Board of Education upheld a decision to suspend the father of a Cedar Heights third-grader from "any and all Woodward Public School sites" for the next six months.
Shawn Boyce received a letter directing him not to go on any Woodward school property approximately two weeks ago after he got into a scuffle with Cedar Heights Principal Sharon Yeager on Feb. 25. He was arrested and later charged for his alleged involvement in the scuffle.
Boyce then had 10 days to file a written appeal of the suspension, which is what the school board was to consider at Wednesday's special meeting.
However, instead of Boyce presenting his appeal as per the school board's agenda, his attorney Jay Trenary, of Oklahoma City, spoke to the board members who were present and asked for the decision on Boyce's suspension to be continued at a later date.
Trenary mentioned an ongoing investigation by the District Attorney's office as the reason for his request for a continuance.
He asked the board to "wait and let all the facts come in" and to "let both sides be heard ... before you make a decision."
In addition, Trenary told the board that while Boyce was willing to agree not to attend any school functions, he would like the suspension to be amended so that he could at least drop off his children at their respective schools.
The school board did not respond to any of Trenary's comments, but instead moved directly to a vote to uphold the six-month suspension.
Board member Linda Harrison made the motion to accept the suspension, which was seconded by board member Glenn Billings. Board president Marlin Trissel then voted in favor of the motion. Board members Doris Ames and Roxy Merklin did not attend the special meeting.
However, Superintendent Vickie Williams and Assistant Superintendent Tom Fisher were in attendance, as were Shawn Boyce and his wife Sarah Boyce.
