Local paramedics awarded Star of Life

Woodward, Okla. — A week ago, Woodward County EMS paramedics Jackie Adams and Chad Campbell learned they had each been named a recipient of the 2010 Oklahoma Ambulance Association Star of Life award.

The Star of Life, a blue, six-pointed star, is the international symbol of emergency medical services.

“It is recognition for the medics that go above and beyond for EMS and taking care of patients,” said Woodward County EMS Administrator Vanessa Brewington.

Brewington said the two were selected for the award by a committee affiliated with the Oklahoma Ambulance Association after she nominated them.

“Jackie’s been a long-time dedicated EMT and has overcome obstacles to obtain her paramedic licensing, and Chad is a highly motivated individual who is concerned about the EMS system as a whole,” she said. “He’s always looking for a way to improve their capabilities.”

Campbell said he was surprised when he learned he was to receive the award.

“We have a lot of good employees in this area that work for us, and I had no idea I’d be selected,” he said.

Though Adams has worked for the EMS service for almost 30 years, she has never received a recognition of this nature.

“So that makes it special,” she said, adding, “It’s nice to be recognized, and not just me but the service, our people and what EMT’s are about. It’s the first time our service has gotten this. We have a lot of qualified people ...  so it’s an honor.”

“I feel excited to be able to go to the capitol and meet some of the legislators,” Campbell said.

Both Campbell and Adams will attend a banquet with 21 other Star of Life EMT’s at the governor’s mansion in Oklahoma City on Tuesday to receive their awards.

During the event one of the the 23 honorees present will be selected to go to Washington, D.C., where he/she will be recognized at another banquet in May, Brewington said.

Adams began her career at Woodward County EMS in 1980 and is a native of Alva. Campbell began his career at Woodward County EMS in September 2006 and is a native of Mooreland.

The Oklahoma Ambulance Association is the state’s biggest organization for emergency medical service providers and affiliated businesses, according to information provided in a news release. It serves as a voice for ambulance services and helps promote patient care standards, education and operational efficiency.
