For the second year in a row, local singer Jennica Kenny has been named as one of the top 10 finalists in the OK City Star talent competition.
“Last year I participated because I thought it would be fun,” Kenny said, noting “I like to sing anywhere I have an opportunity to sing.”
“This year I thought, ‘I’ve done before and made to top 10, maybe could make it further,’” she said.
This year, Kenny was among 94 performers to compete in the contest, which seeks to highlight talented Oklahoma vocalists between the ages of 16 and 25.
“The purpose of the contest is to encourage young singers,” said Marilyn Funk, management team coordinator with the OK City Chorus of Sweet Adelines, which sponsors the contest. “We want to encourage them to pursue vocal goals, whether they be professional goals or just vocational. ... The contest gives them an opportunity to perform in a setting that they don’t normally get in a high school choir or college chorus.”
Kenny and her fellow top 10 finalists will perform on an upcoming KFOR Channel 4 morning show and KOMA radio broadcast.
They will then vie for the title of "2010 OK City Star" during a "Finals Night" competition on Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Herrick Hall of Southern Nazarene University in Bethany.
The winner will be selected based on scores from a panel of expert judges and a popular vote of the audience that evening.
“I hope to wow them,” Kenny said of both the judges and the audience.
She said she plans on singing “Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love” by Trisha Yearwood for her final performance. It’s the same song she performed in auditions to earn her place in the top 10.
Kenny said she knows it’s a long way for people to drive from Woodward, but she hopes those who can will “come by and support me.”
