Dorland fundraiser set in Fort Supply

Woodward, Okla. — Fort Supply City Park is the site of a fundraiser for a former resident diagnosed with brain cancer.

Vonda Kay (Munson) Dorland was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2009. After several surgeries and chemotherapy, she was declared cancer free, but in November 2010, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. Dorland then underwent brain surgery and targeted radiation treatment. She was again declared cancer free until April 2011, when during a routine checkup it was discovered her brain cancer had returned. Dorland began radiation May 9, 2011.

"It is not operable. They have done whole brain radiation. She is going through chemo medicine and chemo IV. They are trying to get it slowed down," Pamela Deweese, one of the fundraiser organizers, said.

Deweese said she and Dorland have been friends since the age of 3 and went through school together.

Although Dorland now lives in Electra, Texas wither her husband Benny and their 10-year-old daughter Shantel, she still has ties to Fort Supply.

"She is for a young lady who grew up in Fort Supply and graduated from Fort Supply. Her mom and dad are from Fort Supply," Deweese said.

Dorland is a 1981 graduate of Fort Supply and the daughter of Eddie and Nadine Munson.

Deweese said she is asking the citizens of Dorland's former hometown to come together this Saturday to help raise money to assist with her ongoing medical expenses.

The fundraiser will start at 7 p.m. in the city park. There will be hamburgers and hotdogs prepared by the Elks and served by Law Dawgs. Entertainment will be provided by the band Overdrive.

There will also be a bake sale, silent auction, a raffle for a 21-inch television donated Walmart, and a raffle for a quilt made by the women of the Fort Supply Methodist Church.

Deweese said the items in the silent auction were donated from merchants in both Woodward and Buffalo.

"I've had a wonderful turn out from the merchants to help put the fundraiser on," she said.

Proceeds from the various activities as well as additional donations will go to the Vonda Kay Dorland Breast Cancer account at Stock Exchange Bank.

"All proceeds go to her to help her with medical expenses and travel expenses to go the doctor. She did work full-time but after the cancer came about she is no longer able to work," Deweese said.

Deweese said she is hoping for a big turnout for the event.

"We will have a fun-filled evening with family and friends. We want everyone to come and bring their lawn chairs," Deweese said.

Dorland, her husband, daughter and other family members plan to be in attendance as well.

"She can't be out in the heat but we are setting up a travel trailer at the park so she can be there and greet friends," Deweese said.
