Woodward, Okla. —
The Northwest Passage Trade Days in Fort Supply are open for business today for the first time.
Fort Supply Chief of Police Joe Cox, who originally came up with the idea, said the trade days start today at 3 p.m. and run until noon on Monday.
“Friday and Saturday the vendors will start selling at 7 a.m. until sundown,” Cox said. “Then on Sunday, out of respect for the churches the vendors won’t start selling until noon and go until sundown.”
Cox said Monday is “basically clean up day and then we’ll get ready for the next month.”
The trade days will be held the second weekend of every month.
Cox said several vendors will be set up in Fort Supply over the weekend.
“Originally almost 275 vendors said they would be coming and the majority of them say are still coming, but it just depends on the weather for how long they will stay,” he said.
Cox said even if “roughly 150” show up out of the 275 vendors “that is still pretty dang good” for a first-time event.
He said vendors are coming from all over the state and even out of state.
“This morning I had a guy call from Weatherford, Texas asking if was still having them (trade days) this weekend, because he was interested in coming,” Cox told The News Wednesday afternoon.
He said vendors will be selling all sorts of items.
“We got applications for antique metal work, crafts, furniture, oil alternatives for sports car racing, chickens, and one lady talked about bringing mini electric scooters,” Cox said.
In addition, Cox said there is no shortage of vendor lots throughout the town.
“As of last count we have 1,083 vendor lots,” he said.
He said the main parts of the vendors lots right now are McCasline Corner located at Reservation and 7th Street and Hickman Hill/Rebel Hill located at Burgess Road and Broadway.
Cox said several small vendor lots are also set up throughout town.
Cox said he is hoping for a good turnout .
“I know we’re going to have a positive turnout from the vendors, but my worry is the turnout from the shoppers,” Cox said. “We’re saying our prayers and trusting God that the best happens.”
THE REASON FOR TRADE DAYS
Cox said the reason for the trade days is to help the city of Fort Supply.
He said vendors rent the land to set up shop on, and the money will be placed in activity fund for the city for beautification projects.
“Over the years, Fort Supply has become an eyesore because there are pot holes in the road and you have to drive 5 miles per hour down them, there is trash everywhere,” Cox said. “It will be nice to have the money to clean up a bit.”
In addition, he said the money can be used to make improvements to City Hall.
“This will just make the city all around better,” Cox said.
Cox said if the vendor spot is on private land the land owner will receive some of the money.
“The city and the community will both benefit,” he said.
