Downtown businesses opening July 4
With the large influx of visitors expected in Woodward for the Fourth of July, downtown businesses have decided to stay open that day to provide shopping opportunities.
About 15 businesses and three restaurants will be open throughout the day on July 4.
Kim West, of The Gazebo, said more businesses would have remained opened for the Fourth, but some owners had already made plans before the Let Freedom Ring 2009 celebration was announced.
“I’m hoping for good business,” West said. “I’ve got some patriotic stuff out.”
Downtown businesses look to give visitors to Woodward a change of pace from the events at Crystal Beach Park.
“There’s going to be an overflow at the park,” West said. “I figured they could come down here and see downtown.”
The city has set up a shuttle route to take people from Crystal Beach Park to Centennial Park, where there is easy access to downtown shopping and dining.
Shuttles will run every 30 minutes from Crystal Beach to Centennial Park throughout the day.
Centennial Park will feature a hydration station where free water will be available. Also radio station 100.1 will be broadcasting from the park.
Kathryn Upchurch, director of Main Street Woodward, said information booths will be in the park. Fliers will be handed out at the booths along with maps.
“A lot of places are running specials,” Upchurch said. “We want to let the public know about them.”
Cowboy’s Tack Shop is planning to run some specials of its own, including a sidewalk sale similar to the one during the Elks Rodeo in July, said Kris Day.
At least, the sidewalk sale will take place outside if the weather cooperates. If it is too hot, Day said the racks will be taken inside so shoppers can be comfortable in air conditioning.
Keeping cool is going to be a major goal for park goers on July 4. Woodward business owners know how important their stores are, since they have air conditioning.
“We’ll have our air conditioning running and show them the Woodward hospitality,” West said.
Day added: “It’s an opportunity to hopefully make some money. I’ve hired lots of extra help. We’re trying to do food or drinks outside and make it something special.”
Businesses that will be open on July 4 include Maxine’s, Peek A Boo, Maurice’s, Peggy’s Fine Apparel, Sharpe’s, Cowboy’s Tack Shop, The Gazebo, GCR Tire Center, Sally’s Antler Art, Competition Sports, Touch of Home, Food for a Healthier Life, Sam’s Compact Discs +, Drifter’s, and Scrap Addicts.
Restaurants that will be open downtown on July 4 include Bramasole Italian Restaurant, The Patio and Playa Azul.
