Train redezvous set at Curtis Hill
This weekend railroad lovers from several states will travel to Waynoka for the Curtis Hill Rendezvous.
Train lovers have been coming together in May and October for the past eight or nine years to photograph these rail machines said Duane Koss, organizer of the event.
On Friday night a group will gather in Woodward.
The rendezvous gears up on Saturday. In the morning Koss said railfans will go to Quinlan and to several of the bridges that overlook the railroad tracks.
At around noon the group will make its way to the Waynoka Train Depot. They will eat lunch there and take a look at the renovations that have been done by Sandie Olson to the historic building.
A video titled “America’s Largest Ice Plant” will be screened. It tells of how the icing of refrigerator cars coming from California and Texas was done during World War II. The Railways Ice Company operated in Waynoka for about 60 years.
The group will head over to Avard, then to Woodward for dinner.
“Basically we photograph many trains in a special place and enjoy some good railfan company,” Koss said.
About 20 people from Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri are expected to attend.
“The red dirt terrain of Curtis Hill is different for many railfans,” Koss said.
This distinguished spot is why Curtis Hill was chosen for the rendezvous.
