Area FFA chapters are gearing up for National FFA Week, which begins Saturday.
Livestock shows will dominate the week as chapters from Beaver, Cherokee, Sharon-Mutual, Taloga and Woodward plan on competing in at least one show. The Woodward District Show begins on Feb. 28, the last day of FFA Week.
The Taloga chapter is going to focus solely on the livestock shows during the week and not have any other activities. Taloga’s local livestock show is Friday and has drawn most of the chapter’s focus. Also the Taloga FFA will compete in the Dewey County Livestock Show on Feb. 23.
Some schools have decided to do more than just compete in livestock shows to celebrate FFA Week.
The Mooreland chapter plans to attend church together. Those at Cherokee expect to do the same thing on Sunday. Both schools will have officers on the radio who will discuss the merits of FFA and what it offers to students.
John Kinney, FFA sponsor at Mooreland, said members will hold a hamburger feed during the week to show the teachers at the school appreciation for their support of FFA and thanks for the job they do.
The school in the area that might be the busiest during FFA Week is Cherokee. Besides attending church and talking on the radio, Cherokee will participate in events throughout the week starting with their local show on Sunday.
The local show will also feature the Second Annual Big Beef Chili Cook-off. This contest pits chili makers against each other to see who has the best overall and spiciest pot of chili.
The next day the Cherokee FFA members will compete in the Alfalfa County Livestock Show. It is also “Blue Day” at the school. Students are encouraged to wear blue and prizes will be given away to those who dress-up the best.
On Feb. 24 the Alfalfa County show will continue and it will be “Gold Day” at the school. Prizes and awards will be given out again for those who dress-up.
Feb. 25 is “White Tee Wednesday” at Cherokee. Students are encouraged to wear white. The FFA and 4-H from Cherokee will be in Kiowa, Kan. competing in the South Barber Judging Contest that day as well.
“Beef Day” will be Feb. 26 at Cherokee. FFA members will hand out beef samples to students and promote beef during lunch. It is also “Camo Day” at the school.
Friday Feb. 27 will be “FFA T-shirt Day” and “Eat More Beef Day.” A teacher appreciation lunch will be held for all faculty and staff at Cherokee Public Schools. A pig calling contest will follow the lunch.
Cherokee is going all out for FFA Week, but Sharon-Mutual is taking a different approach.
Brent McDonald, the FFA sponsor at the school, said his chapter will wait until later in the spring to hold FFA Week activities, such as a teacher appreciation day. He said there is just too much going on with livestock shows to have time to plan activities for FFA Week.
