Pioneer wins area academic bowl, Ringwood second

Pioneer-Pleasant Vale Junior High School won the Division I Area Championship Academic Bowl Friday at the Northwestern Oklahoma State University branch in Woodward.

The Pioneer team finished the competition with a perfect 7-0 record. They will move on to the Challenge of the Champions Feb. 21 at the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics in Oklahoma City.

Ringwood finished in second with a 6-1 record with the only loss to Pioneer.

The Division II Area Championship Academic Bowl was held at High Plains Technology Center on Wednesday. Woodward Middle School took part in Wednesday’s competition that sent Clinton and Elk City to the Challenge of the Champions.

Like the other area championship, the Division I competition featured eight teams. There were two teams who made the championship from Drummond.

The first Drummond team finished in fifth. The second team just missed a trip to Oklahoma City -- coming in third.

The same rules applied to this championship as the one earlier. Teams had four active students who could answer questions. There was no limit on the alternates a team could bring to the competition.

The first and third periods were 20 questions long with students buzzing in with the right answer. Team members were allowed to confer amongst each other to answer the ten questions that made up the second period. Ten points were awarded for each question answered right.

The same questions were asked to each division. Division I students had a bit more trouble with math questions than their counterparts at the larger Division IF schools. Still, similar questions were missed by teams in each division.

For instance, the question “Which crooner and actor, who was known for his song ‘My Way,’ had a career spanning seven decades?” was missed by schools in both divisions. Coaches wrung their hands while their students tried to come up with the answer. When time was up they let out a chuckle as the seventh and eighth graders couldn’t think of the answer -- Frank Sinatra.

Laverne, Hooker and Beaver were among the other schools in the competition.

All the coaches at the academic bowl agreed that the level of competition and intensity in the room was raised compared to their district and region competitions.

Pioneer’s and Ringwood’s academic teams said they will be ready for another high intensity competition when they travel to Oklahoma City for the championship.
