Winning art entries on display

The winners of the Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum Paul Laune High School Art Competition have been chosen and are currently on display at the museum.

In this year’s competition something happened that has not happened in the 28 years of the competition, said Museum Director Robert Roberson.

In this year’s competition Justin Dowdy of Alva not only won first prize in his class but he also won the Best of Show Award and the Paul Laune Spirit Award.

The judge for the competition was artist and author George Kountoupis of Tulsa.

“There were 245 entries this year,” said Roberson.

Ninety-eight of the 245 entries were selected to be showcased in the museum’s exhibit.

Other winners in the competition were as follows:

Category 1, first place, Brenna Smith, Perryton, Texas. Second place, Ana Ramirez, Perryton, Texas. Third place, Allison Lauderdale, Woodward.

Category 2, first place, Carmen Sander, Seiling. Second place, Lora Bryant, Woodward. Third place, Karolyn Thompson, Alva.

Category 3, first place, Ashley Reed, Canton. Second place, Laci Seabourn, Fairview. Third place, Will Robinson, Canton.

Category 4, first place, Brandon Hicks, Canton. Second place, Kaylee Shuck, Seiling. Third place, Chelsey Taylor, Arnett.

Category 5, first place, Justin Dowdy, Alva. Second place, Lace Seabourn, Fairview. Third place, Hannah Baskin, Perryton, Texas.

Category 6, first place, Lewis Nighswonger, Alva. Second place, Lewis Nighswonger, Alva. Third place, Connor Martin, Alva.

Category 7, first place, Trale Tevis, Perryton, Texas. Second place, Brenton Kirkhart, Turpin. Third place, Brittany Busch, Perryton, Texas.

Category 8, first place, Travis Lehi, Alva. Second place, Anna Castanon, Perryton, Texas. Third place, Tessa McGee, Booker, Texas.

A reception will be held for the artists March 26 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the museum. Pizza and soda will be served from 11 a.m. until noon. The awards assembly will be held at noon with Woodward’s Bruce Benbrook and Mary Ferguson making the presentations. For further information contact the museum at (580) 256-6136.
