Miss Northwest Pageant set for 3 p.m. start on Sunday

Woodward, Okla. — More than 30 girls will compete for various crowns in the Miss Northwest Pageant this Sunday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. at the Woodward Arts Theater.

The Miss Northwest Pageant is a fundraising pageant for the Miss Northwest Passage scholarship pageant that will take place in October, according to pageant co-director Jennica Kenny.

"This pageant is open to all girls ages 3 to 17 and is great practice for those that wish to be Miss Woodward or Miss Oklahoma one day," Kenny said.

The participants go through an interview process, talent contest and a modeling competition receiving scores for each section as the judges make their selection for the title winners.

Five titles will be awarded for the following age divisions: 3- to 5-years-old for Miss Northwest Tiny; 6- to 8-years-old for Miss Northwest Mini; 9- to 11-years-old for Miss Northwest Young Miss; 12- to 14-years-old for Miss Northwest Pre-Teen and 15- to 17-years-old for Miss Northwest Teen.

As a former pageant participant herself, Kenny said that pageants can be a great way for girls to build their self-confidence.

"We want the girls that compete to feel good about themselves and to gain confidence in the process of this pageant," she said. "We just want them to have fun with it."

The pageant also helps the girls develop their character and learn how to express themselves, Kenny said.

"It helps the girls build stage experience and to be able to perform in front of a crowd, and it teaches them who they really are," she said.  "The interview process also teaches them that they have their own opinions, and to go with their gut feeling, not to say what they think the judges want to hear."
