Woodward, Okla. — A few Relay for Life teams in the area have thought up creative ways to get a jump-start on their fundraising efforts.
Belinda Ward, co-captain for "Friends and Family of Linda Ward," said her team does fundraisers year-round, but they recently partnered with local businesses for some upcoming events.
On Saturday, April 10, the team is encouraging people to visit the Woodward Bowling Alley. All proceeds from the door between the hours of 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. will be put towards the team’s efforts to help the American Cancer Society.
On Saturday, April 17, the team has joined with the Woodward Beauty College. All money brought in from haircuts, manicures and pedicures that day will also go towards the team’s efforts.
In conjunction with Boomer Rock n’ Roll Skate Park, the team will receive all proceeds taken in on Sunday, April 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Through June, the skating rink is also donating $1 to the team any time skaters present a special coupon from the team when they pay regular admission. Coupons can be obtained around town or by calling Ward at 334-1046.
Ten-year-old Nick Green, of Sharon, is the captain of "Team T-Bear." He said his team is offering its services to people who need anything from their cars washed to their yard mowed.
“He is just a great kid and really wants to make a difference,” said his mother Debbie Green, who noted the boy's enthusiasm for helping to fight cancer influenced many of his friends and family to become involved in the Relay.
This is actually his team of family and friends' second year to participate in the event. Last year, Team T-Bear exceeded it’s goal and raised over $2,600 for the American Cancer Society.
They are hoping to be just as successful this year.
“Many of the boys in our group are offering to help people in the Sharon, Mutual, Vici, Mooreland or Woodward area,” Debbie Green said. “If you have some small jobs around your home, farm or business please call us at 580-216-1765 to schedule a clean-up.”
Relay for Life is also important to the Oklahoma Technology Student Association, according to Ashlee Shryock, a state TSA sergeant at arms, who noted that the Relay is the service project for this year's Oklahoma State TSA Officer Team.
In Shattuck, the high school’s TSA team is busy selling T-shirts "for this worthy cause," Shryock said, noting “The T-shirts are white, with a pink ribbon and say 2010 Oklahoma TSA in navy distressed writing.”
The team will take orders until March 20. Order forms and payments for T-shirts can be dropped off at the Shattuck High School or mailed to Ashlee Shryock, Oklahoma TSA Sergeant at Arms, PO Box 159 Shattuck, OK 73858,
These are only a few Relay for Life fundraisers going on in the area. Ask around because there are plenty of teams that need your help.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Woodward County will be held June 18 at Boomer Stadium. The event honors cancer survivors, current cancer patients and caregivers, and also pays tribute to those who have lost their battle.
Last year, Woodward County raised over $75,000 for the American Cancer Society.
