Woodward senior named Academic All-State

Woodward, Okla. — Woodward High School senior Chelsea Williams has been named one of 100 Academic All-Staters for 2010 by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence.

The award is just the latest for Williams, who plans to major in pharmacy at the University of Oklahoma.  She is enrolled in health education classes at High Plains Technology Center and currently doing her clinical observation at Randy’s Pharmacy.

“I am very excited about this,” a humbled Williams said.  “They only choose 100 people so it’s pretty neat they chose me.”

Williams is the daughter of Lewis Williams.  She is active on the Academic Team,  Art Club and she serves as treasurer for both the Health Occupations Students of America and the Cultural Exchange Club.

Each of this year’s All-Staters will receive a $1,000 merit-based scholarship and medallion. The All-Staters will be recognized at the foundation’s 24th annual Academic Awards Banquet on May 22 at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel and Convention Center.

Williams was nominated for the award by WHS counselor Mary Brenner and Polly Cottom, her health careers instructor.  Brenner commended Williams for her future plans to one day help disadvantaged people receive free or reduced-cost medications.

“Chelsea is an extraordinary young woman who is focused on the pursuit of her post high school career,” Brenner said.  “She is one of the most mature and driven individuals I know and she is very much deserving of this award.”

David L. Boren, chairman and founder of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, describes the selection of the scholars as “Oklahoma’s most rigorous academic competition.”

To be nominated for Academic All-State, students must meet one of the following criteria: an American College Test (ACT) composite score of at least 30; a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) combined critical reading and math score of at least 1340; or be selected as a semi-finalist for a National Merit, National Achievement or National Hispanic Scholarship.
