Woman dies from gunshot wound

A 50-year-old woman who sustained a gunshot to the head Tuesday afternoon has succumbed to her injuries.

“The victim has passed away,” said Woodward Det. Lt. Chuck Wheeler. “She passed away about 10 a.m. this (Wednesday) morning.”

The woman was injured in a shooting that occurred in the garage of a residence in the 2900 block of Edgewood Drive Tuesday afternoon.

She was first transported by ambulance to Woodward Regional Hospital, but was flown later Tuesday afternoon by air ambulance to St. Anthony hospital in Oklahoma City, which is where she died.

The woman’s name has not been released.

Woodward Police and other emergency personnel responded to a call about a woman being shot in the head around 1:49 p.m. Tuesday.

In interviews with the media Tuesday, Wheeler said, “the call originally came in as a self-inflicted wound, but we’re still looking into it.”

As part of the initial investigations Tuesday afternoon, police detectives examined the garage and a pickup truck that had been parked in the garage for blood splatter, Wheeler said in Tuesday interviews, noting “it tells us a story; it tells us what happened.”

The detectives also interviewed the 56-year-old male who lives in the residence where the shooting occurred and examined him for any gunshot residue.

Wheeler said the man told police that he and the woman, who are friends, were sitting in his garage and talking Tuesday afternoon, when he “went inside to get a drink and that’s when he heard the shot.”

The detective said the shot is believed to have come from “a little .25 semi-automatic pistol” which belonged to the man.

The pistol was taken into evidence and is being sent to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation lab for analysis along with additional evidence.

“We’re still getting stuff to the lab,” Wheeler said, noting “it’s going to take awhile,” before the police make a final ruling on the shooting.

“We’re going to wait and see what the evidence shows,” he said.

The detective added that the victim’s body “will go to the medical examiner’s office.”
